Habitat ReStore
A Home Improvement ReSale Store
By Tom C Dwyer

The Habitat ReStore is a home improvement resale store that sells new and gently used home improvement and construction materials.  We provide these materials at low cost, thus making home improvements possible for anyone regardless of income restraints. The Restore is a great place to start when shopping for home improvement items because you never know what you will find. With prices more than 60% off retail you can’t lose.

Started nearly four years ago by two dedicated volunteers in an effort to raise money for the Capital District Habitat for Humanity, the ReStore has blossomed into a thriving community resource.  Since we opened our doors the store has raised more than $300,000 for Habitat and we have diverted more than 390,000 pounds of usable materials from entering the waste stream.

At the ReStore you will find appliances, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, windows, doors, tools, furniture, lighting, plumbing and much more. All materials are donated and we are always looking for new donors.  Donations to the ReStore are tax deductible and pick-ups are available.

Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization created in 1988 to provide home ownership opportunities in partnership with low-income households. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in the community has a decent home in which to live.  Since 1988 we have built 42 homes for families living in the Capital District.

Habitat believes that decent shelter is a basic human need. Yet thousands of local families lack adequate and affordable housing. The high cost of some rental housing leaves low-income families little money for other basic necessities like food, clothing, or health care. Moreover, if the rental unit is substandard it can endanger the health and safety of its occupants, erode their hope and self worth and impair their children’s ability to live up to their personal potential.

The Habitat program provides the dignity and power of homeownership to these people who would not otherwise have the opportunity. Habitat for Humanity helps low-income families help themselves. We build simple, decent houses with donated money, materials and labor. We then sell the homes to our partner families, providing a zero-interest mortgage and a below-market-value sale price. By giving the economically disenfranchised the tools necessary to break the cycle of poverty, we create systemic social change.

Shopping, donating and volunteering at the ReStore allows Habitat to help even more families. The Capital District Habitat ReStore is located at 454 N Pearl St in Albany NY. Our store hours are Thursday 2-7, Fridays and Saturdays from 9-5 pm. Call 518-275-6638 for donations.
